Low expectations…

MT1_1890

God is more than we can ever know. And I expect too little of Him.

We arrived at the Police Academy to sing for about 800 cadets. I was tired, as was everyone else. I got my gear ready, and started photographing the set up and everyone as they arrived. The cadets were marched in from their barracks through the doors at the back of the room. These are hard, lean young men and women. I can see the rough life that lay behind some of them in their faces as they come in. The Commander did not want the chairs we had set up, so they were cleared away, stacked against the wall, and the cadets were left with sitting on the concrete floor.

There were so many that I could not get to my bag in the front to change lenses, so I got a chair and sat by the back door, where a slight breeze was coming in. It is humid, so humid that you never really get dry after your shower in the morning.

I am enjoying that small bit of not as warm air, and listening as Frontline sings and performs for these young people. I even nodded off for a minute. You now that verse about the “effective fervent prayer of a righteous man produces much fruit”? Well, I prayed as they were singing that God would change the hearts of those there, both Frontline and the cadets. I prayed that the ones that knew Him would draw closer I their walk with God, and that the ones that were thinking about God would be drawn to Him for salvation, and even the ones that wanted nothing to do with God would have a spark lit in their hearts that might kindle later.

But my prayer wasn’t fervent. It was more of something to do while we sang again. You see, in my mind at that time, we were just performing one more time. Frontline was going to sign and do a skit or two, Mel would speak, and we would check this stop off of our list and return to the seminary where we were staying for a night’s sleep before doing it again the next day.

But God…

MT1_1951

God wasn’t just going through the motions. He never does. God is all in, all the time.

When the invitation was given, over 45 young people gave their lives to Jesus. God poured out His Spirit in that place both in the cadets and in our young people of Frontline Choir. Souls were saved. Lives were changed.

I was changed. And I learned never to expect little of God. He is not limited by my shortcomings. I’m glad about that.

Over 45 Cadets gave their lives to Christ. The local church collected names and information so they can follow up and help these young people as they begin their new lives.
